Research & Development

We are increasingly committed to improving the eco-friendly profile of our products, mainly through our formulation and packaging choices. Our 4 Research & Development centres work daily to develop excellent formulations in terms of both efficacy and skin tolerability, as well as in terms of eco-sustainability. Our packaging philosophy is based on the principle of guaranteeing quality, safety, complete formulation preservation, convenience and gratification for the end consumer while avoiding the waste of resources and materials. We are constantly striving to optimise and improve the environmental impact of our packaging by making our packs as recyclable and/or recycled as possible and reducing the amount of resources used.

Formulations

Formulations

For raw materials of natural origin, we favour the use of raw materials from sustainable cultivation and those that support the communities they belong to;

All BioNike formulations comply with the Philosophy of Without: they are nickel tested, preservative free, fragrance free (or allergen free) and gluten free.

The photoprotections in the BioNike Defence Sun range are tested as eco-friendly for the marine environment (tested by an independent research laboratory specialising in eco-toxicology studies);

Goovi formulations are clean and vegan, with a very high percentage of natural ingredients (over 95%).

Leocrema sunscreen formulations comply with the "Hawaii Coral Treaty": they do not contain Octinoxate and Oxybenzone, filters prohibited by Law sb 2571 of the State of Hawaii;

Packaging

Packaging

Whenever possible, we favour the use of sustainable and 100% recyclable materials, such as glass and aluminium, for all our packaging;

Since 2020, we have been using recycled plastic for the packaging of all our brands' products;

We are developing single-component packaging made of plastic or easily separable packaging that can be recycled by the consumer;

Where it is not essential, we have decided to eliminate the leaflets, avoiding a waste of paper;

We have eliminated cellophane and replaced thermoformed plastic with pure cellulose pulp from the packaging that included it;

We favour FSC-certified paper and cardboard (Forest Stewardship Council, a label that certifies that the paper and cardboard come from forests managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards.) for product packaging;

Since 2022, we have used recycled materials (such as recycled plastic and aluminium) for all bottles of BioNike face, body and hair cleansing, photoprotection and body care products. In doing so, we achieved the ambitious goal of reducing the use of virgin materials for our product packs by 54%. The use of recycled materials has enabled us to reduce our total CO2 emissions by 20% and put 55,000kg less virgin plastic on the market compared to the previous year;

In 2023, we reached a major milestone with BioNike thanks to the creation of the Glam & Green Make-up Kits: all of our bronzers, blush, compact foundations and powder eyeshadows have been re-launched with a new, exclusive, recyclable and decomposable eco-pack. The eco-design guarantees total separability of the components and facilitates the recovery, sorting and recycling of materials;

As of 2022, Lycia deodorant cans have been made from 100% recycled aluminium and make-up remover bottles have been made from 100% recycled plastic;

All CD products are assessed by Cyclos, a company that certifies the percentage of recyclability of the packaging used; As of 2022, CD shower gel bottles have been made from 70% recycled plastic while deodorant bottles have been made from 100% recycled aluminium;

For the shipment of ESI products, we have eliminated the use of plastic spacers in the boxes by replacing them with similar paper systems. We have eliminated the use of plastic adhesive tape by replacing it with recycled paper tape;

As of 2022, for the ESI Marseille Soap line, we have been using bottles with 50% recycled plastic, leading to a saving of 1,640kg in virgin plastic usage;

Leocrema sunscreen bottles are made from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic;

The L'Arbre Vert packaging used for laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents and all-purpose cleaners, as well as Wash&Go packaging, are made from 100% recyclable plastic;

For L'Arbre Vert products such as washing machine, dishwasher and fabric softener detergents, as well as for Fresh&Clean liquid soaps and Vidal shower gels, we are reducing plastic consumption as much as possible thanks to our eco-refill system. This solution allows an average reduction in plastic consumption of approximately 80% compared to the original bottle. In addition, when the eco-refills are empty and become waste, they are totally flattened, with a minimal footprint.
